Breakthroughs often don't start in your inner circle, they flow in from the edges

Most of us rely on our closest colleagues for advice and support, but real change often arrives from the periphery.

Most of us rely on our closest colleagues for advice and support, but real change often arrives from the periphery. That acquaintance you met at a conference, the former coworker you only hear from every few years, or a teammate from a past project now working in another field—these "weak ties" connect you to different circles. They carry news and perspectives that rarely surface in our daily routines.

It's easy to focus your energy on strong ties, the ones who know your story inside and out. But research and experience show that the most transformative opportunities, new roles, creative ideas, and unexpected breakthroughs often come from the people you see the least. By reaching across these dormant or distant connections, you open a window to information, industries, and collaborations you would never find by staying close to home.

Herminia Ibarra says it best in Act Like a Leader, Think Like a Leader:

To make your networks future-facing, you'll need to build and value your weak ties—that is, the people and groups that are currently on the periphery of your network, those you don't see very often or don't know so well.

Who in your outer network could surprise you with a new perspective or open a door you didn't know existed?

Try This

Reach out to one person at the edge of your network, such as a former coworker, an acquaintance from a past event, or a teammate working in a new field. Just check in, share a quick update, or express appreciation.

Notice What Happens

Do new information, fresh perspectives, or unexpected opportunities start to surface?

Keep Going

Make one small, genuine reconnection each week. These bridges often lead further than you imagine.

If this post resonates, share it with your network. Someone's next opportunity might be only a light touch away.
