Being successful across cultures starts with listening before influencing

I learned about crossing cultures when I moved to Japan, but you do not have to move across the world to experience this.

I learned about crossing cultures when I moved to Japan, but you do not have to move across the world to experience this. Every new team or organization has a culture that is different from the one you just left. What feels normal in one place may be unfamiliar in another, from habits and rituals to unwritten rules.

Those who thrive in new environments start by listening and observing, taking time to understand the rhythm before trying to make their mark. Success is not about blending in so much that your own strengths disappear. Over time, it is just as important to let your perspective show, quietly modeling new ways of working and inviting others to grow. If you hold too tightly to former habits, frustration or burnout often follows. But if you try too hard to fit in, your best qualities can go unseen.

The best cross-cultural leaders I've known move slowly, ask questions out of genuine curiosity, and look for moments when their perspective can be a gift rather than a disruption.

— When No One's Keeping Score

Think back to a time you joined a new team, company, or culture. Did you listen and adapt, or did you struggle to show your unique strengths?

Try This

Pick one meeting or routine this week and pay close attention to the habits, unspoken rules, or group dynamics you notice. Ask a genuine 'why' about the way something is done, or invite a colleague to share the story behind it.

Notice What Happens

Watch for moments when you can model a new approach or offer your perspective.

Keep Going

Every cross-cultural experience, whether global or local, grows your ability to contribute, influence, and belong.

If this resonates, please share with your network to help others navigate new cultures and keep their strengths visible.
